Legend of Fiddler from Morsko

Apart from the famous legend of Avenger from Okiennik Rock, Morsko has also the less known legend of a fiddler who used to play on the nearby rock called Popielarka…
Popielarka is located around 700 meters west from Morsko Castle.

The area of Morsko Castle as well as the nearby Podlesice’s Rocks, although very beautiful and picturesque, is also considered rather remote and savage… Not a lot of people live there. The villages or even little settlements are few kilometers away. Woods, sandy coppices, meadows, rocks, and caves – that is what you can find there.

If you ask the locals about the rocks, they will for sure start to tell you the legend about the fiddler… Fiddler and his maliciously beautiful music…

Many years ago, some would say in the 17th century, some that may be a bit later, every evening, just around the sunset, the mysterious fiddler appeared over one of the rocks, called Popielarka. Wearing red trousers and jacket he started to play magical, hypnotizing music… Music that lured everybody. Nobody could resist it. All inhabitants of local villages tempted by the sound of the magic violin were leaving their evening works and duties and like in some kind of dream run to the rock… There they were dancing like in some kind of trance till the morning…

The fiddler from Morsko played the music that made people forget about everything… But who was he? Who was this eerie fiddler? Nobody really knows the answer to that question. But most people believe that it was a devil himself. Why? Because he lured all the folks away from evening church’s services and prayers… Because nobody could control themselves when heard the music… The sounds of the violin were like an addiction.

Who else would like to make something like that to mankind? It had to be devil or one of its servants. In the morning, when the first sunlight appeared in the sky, the fiddler was simply disappearing. Exhausting people had to come back to their everyday duties knowing that the story would repeat… It is said that the eerie music lured even the Swedish troops that invaded Poland during the Deluge time of 1655-1660. The soldiers who were ordered to march direction Cracow, could not resist the spell and also spent the night dancing in the woods…

Why the fiddler suddenly disappeared and is not playing his music again in Morsko? Nobody knows. Or maybe, he did not disappear. Some nature-lovers and climbers who happened to be in the area after the sunset claim, that they had heard the magic violin sound coming from afar… If you, dear reader, are in Morsko during the evening hours, please let me know, if you listen to anything like violin music… Music that could make you dance all night long. Maybe the fiddler is still there. Maybe the power of the spell is no longer strong enough…
